Capacity Building & Support
to MANET+ & Member PLWHA Support Groups project aims
at building the capacity of MANET+ through technical and
financial support from USAID through Save the Children/Umoyo
Network.
The first phase of project started in 2001 continuing in
subsequent yearly phases up to March 2005. The Project has
an optional year (April 05 March 06)
Objectives & Recent Achievements
1. To increased availability of PLWHA
support services
Encouraged formation of new support groups
Commenced on collection of information on available health
and treatment services in Malawi to improve PLWHA access
to treatment, care and support
Increased and diversified funding resources besides USAID
National HIV/AIDS Advocacy
Sensitization meetings on benefits of VCT
Support groups formation workshop
National empowerment workshop
2. To improved quality of PLWHA support
services
Conducted training activities, including governance and
management
Conducted an ODA
Developed and implemented HIV/AIDS regional plans
Developed and implemented MIS of the network
Visit support groups
Staff recruitment and establishment of MIS
Conducted organizational assessment (OA)
Conducted Management and Governance training workshop
Participated in quarterly Umoyo Network sub-grantee meetings
Training for Human Resource Management for Managers
Processed placement of MIS volunteer from WUSC
3. To reduced stigma and discrimination
around VCT and other HIV related services
Engaged in HIV/AIDS advocacy for PLWHA rights through regional
plans
Participated in the formulation of the National HIV/AIDS
Policy for Malawi
Participated in review of the Country Coordinating Mechanism
(CCM)
Facilitated observance of the national observance of the
International AIDS Candlelight
memorial
Conducted a National Empowerment Workshop to build capacity
of RCCs and partner organizations
Edited the Parliamentary Tumbuka Advocacy Guide
Edited and distributed booklet on Rights and Freedoms for
PLWHA
Disseminated the MANET+ research results on Stigma and Discrimination
as they affect PLWHA in Malawi
Participated in preparations and observance of World AIDS
Campaign/world AIDS Day

The project covers a total of 10 districts selected on
the basis of population size, vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and
support services available.
Started in 2001 the project support X member support groups
and associations of people living infected and/or affected
by HIV and AIDS, up to Y members as of today.

Through the Capacity Building and Support
to MANET+ and Member Support Groups, the network’s
secretariat significantly grew in both human and material
resource terms. From a staff base of three in 2001 to eleven
staff in 2005; from a single room office space in 2001 to
seven roomed-office space in 2004, a vehicle, training,
operational support, technical support, resource mobilization,
networking, etc. As a direct result of this growth, systems
and structures of the network started to function with much
visibility and effect.
