MANET currently has over 400 members
who are support groups of PLWHA or CBOs working
in HIV/AIDS prevention throughout Malawi.
An average group has about 50 members, with
an executive committee of 9 - 12 people, while
some other CBOs such as NAPHAM have up to
350 members at each branch. There tends to
be more adults than young people, and more
women than men in each organisation.
General activities
of our members include
Group Therapy (to provide counselling and support
to members)
HIV/AIDS Education (through songs, dramas
or testimonies)
Counseling and Referral
Home Based Care
Orphan Care
Income Generating Activities
Vocational Skill Training
Some of our members also provide
Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT), Welfare
Fund, Drug Revolving Fund; Widows Association,
etc.
There is active participation
in communities at grassroots levels in response
to the AIDS epidemic. This has been clearly
demonstrated by the self-help spirit and voluntarism
among our members.
Lack of capacity in term of
skills, material, financial and management
support is one of the greatest threats facing
the majority of the groups. While a few may
have adequate management and/or financial
and material support, the majority of the
groups are stranded.
